Let’s take a time machine back to the 90’s. Retro J’s, Boomboxes and of course… The Fresh Prince.
The TV-Show that transcended stereotypes of Black families at the time, was guaranteed to drop a few gems and follow up with a few laughs along the way. If you know anything about the 90’s era and the sitcoms that brought us sheer enjoyment , “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” created and directed by Will Smith, is arguably at the top of that list.
Will Smith, who was then known for wholesome hip-hop at a time when gangsta rap was on the rise, was the unlikely star of the sitcom based on the real life experiences of producer Benny Medina. The show was about a street-smart teenager from West Philadelphia, who was sent to live with his rich and conservative relatives, the Banks family, in Bel-Air California. After its debut on September 10, 1990, the cast of the Fresh Prince captured the minds and hearts of viewers with a show that would change television for many years to come.
Happy 25th Birthday Fresh Prince! If there is one thing we’re thankful for, it’s the theme song you can’t help but finish, when you hear it.
“In West Philadephia born and raised…”
